Hi! I’m Jon and I’m no spring chicken.

 As far as the fitness industry is concerned - at 53 years old - I should have been put out to pasture long ago. I’ve racked up a number of injuries over the years as I imagine most of us have by the time we reach the ripe old age of 50.

In 2020, I ruptured one of my lumbar discs. It gave me foot drop in my left foot and made it almost impossible for me to walk around the block.

I remember laying flat on my back and staring up at the ceiling for hours because I knew if I moved out of that position, my lumber disc would send a painful nerve shock through my left leg.

Eventually, the pain went away and the rebuilding started, but I wasn’t alone. I had the help of my physical therapist, my chiropractor and over 15 years of personal training experience. After six months of treatments and hard work in the gym, I walked back onto the tennis court and played some of the best tennis of my life, even if it was only for a short time.

What happens if you keep kicking the can down the road?

The health outlook for men and women over the age of 50 is not good. Currently, the medical community and U.S. government agencies have identified at least five physical conditions that adversely affect older adults and seriously limit their quality of life as they get older:

1. Obesity.

According to the National Institute of Health, the obesity rate in the U.S. for men and women over the age of 50 is an alarming 43 percent and continues to climb every year. Increased body weight puts undue stress on the joints of the lower back and knee, which leads to chronic pain, dysfunction and a loss of mobility. Obesity is also directly linked to heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and several types of cancer.

2. Bone loss.

Osteoporosis affects 20 percent of women over 50. A recent National Institute of Health study revealed that 40% of women over the age of 50 with osteoporosis will suffer a painful fracture in their lifetime.

3. Poor Balance.

Twenty-five percent of women over 50 will lose their balance, fall and hurt themselves badly enough to require immediate hospitalization. A lack of balance can lead to feelings of anxiety and fear in older adults that ultimately results in a less active lifestyle. 

4. Muscle atrophy.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, we lose 8% of our muscle mass each decade after age 30. By age 50, we have lost almost one-fifth of our muscle. This amount of extreme muscle loss leads to a lack of stamina, difficulty walking, trouble climbing stairs, poor balance and falls and a critical decrease in muscle size. 

5. Joint Pain.

The Centers for Disease Control report that 45% of men and women over 50 suffer with chronic back pain. 46% of older adults endure acute knee pain. 15% of adults over 60 put up with constant hip pain. These painful joint conditions severely limit physical activity and enjoyment of recreational activities.
